What is Living Law?
Law, in its many forms, is a common thread which regulates the relations of people in a given society. It also regulates the relations between individual societies. The law is thus a useful lens for viewing the quintessential aspects of societies across the globe. Living Law® ‘s mission is to help improve understanding regarding the role of law in general as well as in relation to specific peoples or nations. Our multimedia materials address that mission across two dimensions:
The Living Law® Nations Series
The goal of Living Law® ‘s video lectures is to provide virtual context- historical, social, and geopolitical- to nations as we understand them today. By “bringing” the viewer to the location of the country and/or event under discussion, Living Law® ‘s episodes aim to provide an entertaining as well as an educational learning experience.
The general format of Living Law® is a multimedia “visit” to a given country. For each country, some basic information is provided on its people, governmental and legal system, and economy. Each episode examines one or more legal issues which are either unique to that country or for which that country provides a particularly good backdrop for analysis and discussion. Each“travellectureTM also explores the place of that country in the broader regional and geopolitical context. The duration of each episode varies (generally 30-60 minutes) depending upon the number and nature of topics explored.
The Living Law® Topical Series
Some viewers are more interested in overarching topics rather than a deep dive of specific countries or regions. For this group, we have created a series which caters to those interests, with Law as a common denominator. The topical approach also permits a comparative view by looking at the underlying subject in multiple national or regional contexts. Where possible, the Topical episodes of Living Law® include interviews with locals and experts to provide additional insight.
The Topical series covers the following areas:
- Law & Religion
- Law & Language
- Law & Nation
- Law & Conflict
- Law & History
- Law & Culture
- Law & Expression
- Law & Science
- Law & Environment
- Roots of Law
- The Legal Profession
Who is it for?
Educators and Students
Internationalization and technology are generally considered the primary challenges facing higher education today. Leveraging digital technology and the common thread of law, the Living Law® materials can be used to support courses in a number of fields beyond legal studies, such as: history, political science, international relations, international policy and more.
For those involved in running, or interested in participating in, the increasing variety of “foreign” educational experiences (study abroad, student exchange, internship, etc.) of an educational institution or business, the Living Law® Nations series is a good tool to support experiential learning.
Businesses and Organizations
Businesses and organizations both large and small recognize the impact of globalization, which is only amplified by technology. Many provide foreign training programs to expose their personnel to other cultures. But such programs can only be offered to a select few, and it is difficult to cover the entire globe.
Living Law® episodes facilitate the “global upskilling” of the entire workforce by providing a baseline level of background for each country. So whether you are investigating opportunities or managing an existing relationship with someone in a foreign country, our travellecturesTM can help you on your journey.
Travelers and Seekers
Ever wish you could find a short travel guide to a country destination which focuses more on just what to see, eat, and where to sleep? Living Law® aims to supplement that other, admittedly important, information by walking you through the historical and social context of the people who live in a place you plan to visit.
Using its patented (OK, it’s not patented) travellectureTM format, Living Law® is a combination of travel video, documentary film, and lecture, bringing together the best each of these communication channels has to offer.
Legal and Other Professionals
The professional services industry, including the legal profession, are also impacted by globalization and technology. Professionals are increasingly confronted with questions about other legal systems, or find themselves working with professionals from other countries.
The Living Law® series helps you appreciate the broader historical and social context which define the operating environment of your clients, business partners, and colleagues across the globe.
